What is the Science Behind the Aurora Sleeping Mask?
In our mask, we plan to use electrochromic PDLC film. This film is a clear, bendable, lightweight material located at the front of the mask. When a small electrical current passes through it, the electrochromic film turns from transparent to opaque and back again! A lightweight battery pack hidden within the mask will provide this current. When the user is sleeping, the film will remain opaque, creating the blackout effect ideal for a good night's sleep. However, at the designated "wake-up time," the film will turn back to its transparent state, allowing natural light to pass through, gently waking up the user. For those who may not have access to natural light at their desired wake-up time, there are also blue LEDs on the side of the mask, mimicking daylight, and allowing the user to wake up. Being woken up by natural light has been proven to have a variety of benefits, both to one's mental and physical health, making it key to feeling well rested in the morning.
